Introduction to equestrian disciplines
Show jumping
Show jumping is an equestrian discipline in which horse and rider complete a course of obstacles in a set order. The aim is to finish the course without faults and within the time allowed.
Penalties are given for faults such as knocking down an obstacle, a refusal or exceeding the time allowed. When competitors have equal results, the final ranking is often decided by time or a jump-off.
The height of the obstacles and technical difficulty of the course depend on the competition level. At the highest level, show jumping requires power, speed and precision from the horse, while the rider must choose the right pace and the most efficient route.
The highlight of the show jumping programme at Tallinn International Horse Show is Sunday’s FEI World Cup™ Grand Prix.

Dressage
In dressage, horse and rider perform a predefined test consisting of a series of movements and exercises. Judges assess accuracy, harmony, the quality of the horse’s movement and the cooperation between horse and rider.
Each movement receives a score, and the final result is expressed as a percentage of the maximum possible score. The combination with the highest percentage wins.
At the highest levels of dressage, the programme includes demanding movements such as pirouettes, passage and piaffe. The aim is to perform even the most difficult exercises with harmony, balance and apparent ease.
